Typical Jamaican Meals:
Your Cook/Maid (in Jamaica she is called a "Helper") can prepare meals of your choice, but you will be sure to want to try some typical Jamaican Dishes!

Jamaica's National Dish, Ackee & Saltfish

Jamaica's National Dish, Ackee & Salt-fish, for instance... for breakfast you might like to try Jamaica's National Dish, Ackee and Saltfish. Ackee is a "tree vegetable" brought to Jamaica from Africa in the slave days.

When cooked, it resembles scrambled eggs but has a unique flavour. It is prepared with salted cod fish, bacon, onions and sweet pepper and is served with boiled green bananas and dumplings. Another Jamaican breakfast might include shredded Smoked Herring marinated in vinegar and onion. This happens to be my personal favourite! It is typically served with green bananas and boiled dumplings, but it is fabulous with toasted bagels and cream cheese!

Of course your cook can also prepare everything from bacon and eggs to pancakes, and you'll probably find Jamaican breakfasts so hearty that you won't even want lunch, but will skip straight to dinner with just an afternoon snack!

Dinner choices are almost endless! One of Jamaica's unique specialties is Escovitch Fish. It is local fish fried to crispy perfection then topped with vinegar and onions. Other dinner choices might include:

  • Curried Goat or Chicken
  • Oxtail and Beans
  • Stew Peas with Beef
  • Jamaica Fried Chicken
  • Roast Chicken or Beef, Island Style
  • Jerk Style Chicken, Pork or Fish
  • Brown Stewed Chicken

If you are brave, you should certainly try our local Scotch Bonnet Pepper. Absolutely great on anything, but not for the faint hearted!
